Professor Ellesedil cleared his throat loudly, "Perhaps we could leave the non-topic conversations for outside the classroom?" He suggested, though his voice let them all know that it wasn't optional. "You mentioned the Third Age, Nara, and the War of the Ring. That is one of the best known periods of our history, and one of the most influential on our present. How about we begin with what you already know? Can anyone name me some of the Elven influences of that period?"

Selene immediately remembered the stories she had been told as a child by her father, who was a warrior for the Rivendell forces during the Third Age. "The Secret Council was held in Rivendell by Lord Elrond Half-Elven. It was decided there that the Ring was to be taken to Mount Doom by the Fellowship of the Ring. Also, since every race, save for the orc, was represented in the Fellowship, Prince Legolas of Mirkwood accompanied the ring bearer as a member," Selene said.

"And also the Lady Galadriel of Lothlorien provided food, cloaks, and gave gifts to the Fellowship. Not to mention sending Haldir and warriors to the aid of men in Helms Deep who were attacked by Saruman the White, the ally of the Dark Lord." Nara answered.

Professor Ellesedil smiled, "Good. Narawen, your point recarding Lady Galadriel is perhaps more important than you know. Galadriel was an eager participant and leader in the rebellion of the Noldor and their flight from Valinor, a few thousand years earlier. She was, however, completely separated from Fëanor and his kin, and did not participate in the Kinslaying at Alqualondë. It's ok if you don't understand much of that, though feel free to visit the library if you would like to find out more, otherwise, you much wait for future lessons. The point of that is, her rebellious actions meant she was banned from returning to the Undying Lands, and it was only her assistance of the Fellowship that lifted that ban. However, time has also distored the tale and, in fact, no elves came to Helm's Deep. Five points to each of you for answering."
"Regarding Prince Legolas, could anyone tell me what it was that brought him to Rivendell in the first place?"

"Excellent," he grinned, momentarily wondering which way to turn the lesson. "Now, a lot of the Elven activity during the War of the Ring is not recounted in the main events of the story. Their time as the leading race of Middle-earth was coming to end and although they assisted where and when they could, Lord Sauron's biggest fight was with men. That did not mean, however, that the Elves esaped his evil.... Do either of you know to what I am referring here?"

Selene raised her hand, but she wasn't sure. "Umm...well, I think that they were facing some problems in mirkwood, since Dol Guldur was in Southern Mirkwood. And while the Fellowship was in Lothlorien, there were orcs that went through and were chased....right?" she said.
